This week, the United States has been preparing for the end to Title 42. Title 42 was a border restriction from the pandemic era that allowed the government for two years to turn away migrants quickly.

Officials have warned that the expiration of the policy could lead to a surge in migrants, worsening the humanitarian crisis already affecting the border communities. In recent days, makeshift camps have proliferated as border crossings increase.

Following the expiration of Title 42, US immigration officials will return to protocols that have been in place for decades. Under this system, migrants can be removed from the United States, detained, or released back into the United States as their cases are heard by immigration court.

Biden's administration has made various preparations for the expected influx. The Biden administration has sent thousands of reinforcements to the border including asylum officers and US soldiers.
