Ukraine Accuses Russia of ICBM Launch #

Ukraine’s military claims Russia fired an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) into its territory for the first time, marking a potential escalation in the ongoing conflict. Allegations center on an attack in Dnipro, where two people were injured and buildings damaged.

The missile reportedly launched from southern Russia around 5 a.m. Kyiv noted Russia also used an X-47M2 Kinzhal ballistic missile and seven cruise missiles, with air defenses intercepting most. A Western official, however, disputed Ukraine’s ICBM claim, confirming it was a ballistic missile but not intercontinental.

Amidst these attacks, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky remarked on Russia’s use of new missiles, stating, “Today, our crazy neighbor has once again shown who he really is and how he despises dignity, freedom, and human life in general.” Russia has not commented on the accusation.

This military escalation occurred during a tense week in the conflict. Recently, Ukraine used US-made ATACMS and British/French Storm Shadow missiles, pushing the conflict’s boundaries further. In response, Russia updated its nuclear doctrine, potentially lowering the threshold for first-use of nuclear weapons.

Dnipro, near contested regions, remains under frequent bombardment, with attacks impacting housing and critical infrastructure. The city, a significant hub, is strategically important due to its proximity to front lines and robust air defenses. Despite thorough protection, regions like Dnipropetrovsk continue to suffer under ongoing militant actions.
