Social media has played a significant role in the anti-immigration riots in the United Kingdom. Elon Musk has joined in by posting on social media that ‘civil war is inevitable.’ The UK prime minister’s spokesperson responded, stating that there is no justification for Musk’s comment. The UK government is determined to bring those responsible for the riots and their online supporters to justice. A man in Leeds has been charged with using threatening words or behavior intending to stir up racial hatred online. The riots were sparked by false claims online about the perpetrator of a stabbing attack. Online platforms, including X, have been accused of amplifying false information. The UK government is pushing for action against the spread of false information and online criminality. The Online Safety Act gives social media platforms new responsibilities, but it is not yet in effect. Ofcom, the regulator, is working on codes of practice and guidance.
